The Status of Women in International Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics: What We Know and Need to Know to Increase the Advancement of Women

Principal Investigator:
Project Overview
Background & Purpose:
  • We will develop a catalog of research-driven strategies and implementation guidelines to increase women’s representation and advancement in three key scientific disciplines: chemistry, computer science, and mathematics.
  • We will develop an annotated bibliography of international references about women’s participation in these fields.
  • An edited volume will be produced with scholarly articles that examines the global representation of women in these fields.
Research Design:

The research design for this project is a comparative synthesis research project. This project will not collect original data, but will examine existing data on women in computer science, chemistry and mathematics in international settings. Analysis will be generally descriptive, examining frequencies by nation, discipline, gender, and level within STEM.

A wiki and other online tools are being used to enable cross-national collaboration on the writing project. Writing teams will be formed at a workshop to be held in the Washington DC area for up to 50 invited participants.

Findings:

To date this project has not generated any findings.

Publications & Presentations:
  • Edited volume of chapters written by writing teams formed via the project.
  • Annotated bibliography of international sources related to women’s participation in chemistry, computer science and mathematics.
Other Products:
  • Review of literature on women’s participation in chemistry, computer science, and mathematics.
  • Online resources anchored in the research and evaluation literature for research or technical assistance to develop and implement context-specific policies that inform programs and practices.
